The idea of a wedding abroad has likely been on your mind: getting married at a beautiful beach location, a mountain spot, or a vineyard in the French hilly countryside. That is super romantic, isn't it? Are you planning to get married abroad, or are you considering it? Then this can be a bit more challenging than a location right around the corner. After all, you can't just visit the location and arrange things on the spot. That is why we would like to give you a few tips to help you make your dream wedding abroad a reality.
1. Choosing the location
Each country has its own conditions and rules. For example, you can marry under Dutch law in the Netherlands Antilles, Curaçao, without any problems. In other countries, you must ensure that you have the right person who can grant special permission. Therefore, most couples have a ceremonial wedding abroad and have their marriage legally validated in the Netherlands. You do this just before or after the wedding. If you do want to formalize your marriage on location, you must have it officially translated so that it is also legally valid in the Netherlands.
Besides the business aspect, you are of course free to choose a location. When making your choice, take into account factors such as the weather and the cost of getting there. Especially when inviting guests!
2. Establish the budget
You can perfectly well organize a wedding abroad even on a small budget. For example, you will have fewer guests. Additionally, a beach wedding doesn't have to be an expensive location. Did you know that there is special wedding insurance? Should anything happen that prevents your wedding abroad from going ahead, you will be well prepared.
3. Help from a wedding planner
In the Netherlands, hiring a wedding planner is considered a luxury or unnecessary. However, if you want to get married abroad, this is something to seriously consider and certainly not an unnecessary luxury! Choose someone you trust and who has experience with international weddings. A wedding planner can take a lot of work and stress off your hands, so you only have to enjoy the fun side of getting married.
4. Matching clothing
For a beach wedding, you will choose different attire than for a wedding in a vineyard. A dress with a long train, for example, is not very practical on the sand… It is smart to choose your location first so that you can adapt your clothing accordingly. 5. Invite guests

A wedding in the Netherlands lasts a day, but for a wedding abroad, you also have to factor in travel time. However, you do give them a good excuse to turn it into a (mini) vacation!
